Between Heaven and Earth
How staff and student collaboration can be at the centre of your research and enhance pedagogy.
Many staff are engaged in practice-based research and bring their learning directly to the classroom.
In the summer of 2024 Mike Peel and Tristan Tull decided to embark on a pre-term short film exercise that would serve the students about to enter their final year as they would be making their own final year productions in the autumn term. Mike had written the script and would direct and Tristan would produce. With staff taking the ‘head of department’ roles (ie director, producer, cinematographer and audio) the students would also take on production roles enabling them to learn through doing and observing.
Between Heaven and Earth is a short biographical film about the mountaineer George Mallory and his wife Ruth and is set on a day’s hiking in the Lake District on their honeymoon.
Shot over three days in September it served as a means for third year staff and students develop skills and enhance cooperation.
Between Heaven and Earth features the direct involvement of five Regent’s staff, twelve students and collaborations with educators from Abbey Road Studios, the University of Lancaster and University of the Creative Arts. 'Between Heaven & Earth' was an official selection at the Kingston International Film Festival, The Alpine Film Festival and the New Renaissance London Film Festival in 2026.
