- Abstract
- Objective: Potential predictors of Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) were proposed and investigated in women screened for eating disorder symptoms. Method: A community sample (n = 563) completed an online survey measuring eating behaviour, IU, insecure attachment, extroversion and openness to experience (EDE-Q 6.0, IUS-27, ECR-S, NEOFFI). The data were analysed by t-tests, correlations and multiple linear regression. Results: High levels of IU were found in those with eating disorder symptoms (n = 349; t(555.59) = -13.490, p = .000). Insecure attachment (â = .185) and extroversion (â = -.175) significantly predicted IU (p < .001) but openness to experience did not (â = -.031, p > .05). The model predicted 60% of the variance in IU scores. Discussion: The data suggested that attachment insecurity and low extroversion predicted IU. The results add to the accumulating evidence of the clinical relevance of IU in eating disorders. Implications for treatment are discussed.
