- Abstract
- Recently, the phrase Africa Rising has been used a lot to describe the high growth rates of many African countries. Some of the fastest growing economies are in Africa and there is renewed hope for a continent that for so long was labelled hopeless and rather condescendingly, the Dark Continent. Economists all over the world are taking another look at Africa and are trying to find out what, why and how this happened. Ghana, of course, is no exception and it is frequently held up as an example to other African countries because of its relatively liberal trade policies, its stable democracy and the amount of investment it has managed to attract. This research paper looks at the last two decades in terms of growth figures and tries to offer solutions to problems that persist to this day. It explores the effectiveness and limitations of major economic policies, with the goal of learning from them for future reference.
