- Abstract
- Time is a fundamental element of life and the Universe; temporality is one of the existential givens of the world. Time permeates the very existence of all living beings, and the life of the psyche is itself a temporal phenomenon. Therefore any issues that clients may bring to therapy will be linked to their experience of time and their relationship with time. The purpose of this dissertation is twofold. Firstly, I seek to explore the issue of ones relationship with time and temporality, both through a wide-ranging review of the literature and various existing conceptual understandings, and through a heuristic investigation of my own experience of time and temporality. Secondly, building on the foregoing, I propose the outline of a theoretical model the TTT model by which the clients relationships with time and temporality can be examined explicitly, and which aims at healing and integration of the clients relationship with time and temporality. Linear and cyclical concepts of time are examined and critiqued in relation to various models of psychotherapy. There is a more systematic account of existential-phenomenological and Buddhist views of time, and also of temporal orientation, with its possible relationship to Jungs psychological types. There is a comprehensive heuristic exploration of my experience of my own relationship with time and temporality, including my experience of it within my therapy and in my clinical work. Drawing on the conceptual and heuristic research, the TTT model is an integrative model whose philosophical basis is Zen master Dogens philosophy of time, along with the existential-phenomenological view of temporality, while its psychotherapeutic approach is also informed by elements of gestalt, Jungian and psychosynthesis models, and also central to it are Rogers core conditions and the practice of mindfulness.
