- Abstract
- The global container shipping industry is commonly regarded as the backbone of modern transportation and logistics. However, like many of the worlds major key industries, there are many improvements to be made. This dissertation focuses on finding developments that could improve sustainability and efficiency for the global competitiveness of the container shipping industry. The importance of improving this sector derives from the increasingly demanding consumer retail sector and the ever-growing effects of globalization. The goal for this research paper is to create an image of what can be undertaken to create a more streamlined container shipping industry. This research paper contains extensive analyses based on the available literature and other secondary data as well constructive, qualitative primary data collected for the sole purpose of this research to create an inductive research paper. Key points sourced from secondary data have provided the framework on which to target the primary data collection. By comparing the results from both methods, this research paper aims to create a contrast of what methods are currently being developed to aid the developments in the global container shipping industry as well as providing a structure on which future innovation can be based. By researching techniques and methods utilized in the container shipping industry as well as other large industries, a framework was created on which to base the future innovation and developments for the container shipping industry. Having finished the framework, in-depth interviews with executives from intermodal container lessor Textainer helped to create the final focus point for this research. After determining the most plausible future directions for efficiency and sustainability-based solutions for the container shipping industry it can be determined that the industry needs to focus on the development of DSS systems as well as GSCM by investing into sector-specific ICT solutions and it needs to focus on the change from fossil fuels such as HFO to more environmentally friendly fuels such as MGO and biodiesel.
