- Abstract
- Political organisations of all types face the same core issue: persuasion on a mass scale in competition with hundreds of differing viewpoints. Political communicators have had to become ever more sophisticated in the way they use the tools available to them. This dissertation investigates how two very different political organisations are using the same technique the exploitation of audiences weak digital media literacy (and specifically visual literacy) in order to further their own agendas. This thesis will compare the digital marketing techniques used by two very different political organisations; President Barack Obama in both his 2008 and 2012 campaign, and extremist militant organisation ISIS (aka the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria). After comparing, contrasting and evaluating the techniques both used, the extent to which these techniques rest on exploiting their audiences lack of visual and digital literacy will be demonstrated. This dissertation will use three main communication concepts to analyse both organisations; visual and media literacy, political authenticity and personality led media.
