- Abstract
- This dissertation is concerned with the question how multi-lingual therapists construct emotional meaning when working in their second language. The main focus was on the experience of the individual multi-lingual psychotherapist and the research employed Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to engage with the participants. The literature reviewed highlighted a gap in the pre-existing theoretical body of research in the area of multi-lingualism from the therapists perspective. Four multi-lingual participants from different theoretical modalities were recruited and interviewed. The four interviews were analysed following principles of IPA. The findings offered an insight into the complexity of the effect of language on the sense of self and the experience of the participants of their different language identities. This has a direct bearing on the sense of the therapist role in the different languages. The way emotional content is created with the clients was described by the participants as beyond the realm of the purely linguistic and within the intersubjective field of somatic attunement. It also raised the question of in which language trainees engage in their personal therapy and how the topic of multilingualism is covered by training organisations. The findings also produced several areas of interest for future research.
