- Abstract
- There is lack of literature on the impact on narcissistic personality on consideration of cosmetic surgery. Additionally, the existing literature confirms the influence of self-esteem, body-shape dissatisfaction and dissatisfaction with life as being key factors in motivating women to consider cosmetic surgery. The pattern of choices for cosmetic surgery across Iran and the UK is dissimilar according to International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (2014) and The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (2014). The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of culture and consideration of cosmetic surgery on self-esteem, satisfaction with life, body-shape dissatisfaction and narcissistic personality amongst Iranian and British women. 292 participants have participated completing a survey. A cross-sectional, quantitative quasi-experiment method has been adopted with a self-report survey consisting of demographic information followed by the four scales: Self-Esteem, Satisfaction With Life, Body-Shape Questionnaire and Narcissistic Personality Inventory. The results show that there is significant difference in dependent variables based on culture, which is found to be only due to various body-shape dissatisfaction amongst the participants. The consideration of cosmetic surgery has no significant main effect on the dependent variables. Culture has a slight effect on body-shape dissatisfaction. Self-esteem, satisfaction with life, body-shape dissatisfaction and narcissistic personality did not affect cosmetic surgery considerations. Interaction of culture and cosmetic surgery did not have a main effect on the dependent variables. Narcissistic personality is found to be higher amongst those who do not consider future cosmetic procedures."
