- Abstract
- Climate change, pollution, decimation of animal wildlife and the depletion of natural resources for economic purposes are some of the most serious consequences associated, to date, to anthropogenic activity. The natural habitat where the human population engages on a daily basis has reached a worrying stage, and unless organizations remodel their operational structure it will not be possible to achieve sustainable development. One may argue the success that can be achieved on behalf of those companies implementing sustainability at the core of its operations, as there is so much that can and needs to be done. As a result, the following dissertation seeks to understand how Alisea, a small-medium enterprise based in the north-eastern Italian territory, is gaining competitive advantage by practicing sustainability through sustainable innovation. In order to address the research question, a case study has been created to give insight into Aliseas corporate world, the motivations driving the company and the operations that Alisea has been able to carry out following the redesigning of its business model. The findings have shown that Alisea is gaining its competitive advantage following the restructuring of their business model, by recycling and reusing waste materials through upcycling practices and creativity, to produce objects for organisations corporate communication. One company connects with Alisea to reutilize waste materials originating for their industrial production processes to produce something valuable and innovative, to express the commitment of such company to the preservation of the natural habitat, as well as contributing to the shaping of a world where less waste reaches land fields or incinerators. The journey Alisea began in 1994 hopes to convey the urge for change, in order to sustain life for the generations yet to come. A lot still needs to be done and there is hope, within Alisea, that other corporations will join the re-evolution, as Alisea CEO Susanna Martucci claimed upon our encounter.
