- This qualitative research will set out to explore the lived experience of voluntary migration via two key strands of enquiry. Firstly, what does it mean to choose to leave home for settlement in a different country and secondly, what is the experience of living in a foreign land? The analysis employs Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to gain an insight into the subjective experience of four participants. By means of semi-structured interviews, the study explores the interconnected dynamic between home, identity and belonging. The analysis reveals complex and ambivalent dynamics of the migration experience, characterised by a tension between the desire to stay and an urge for return. The findings suggest that home is not a phenomenon that is cast in stone but instead, exists as a multifaceted matrix of emotions, interactions, experiences and environments that are ever-shifting, shaping and re-shaping. Relatedly, notions of belonging and identity emerge as fluid and flexible in nature morphing through shifting contexts and changing situations. The journey of migration is often perceived as a transitional experience through which loss and disorientation give way to gradual adaptation, accomplishment and self-actualisation revealing its non-pathological dimension. The study attempts to present a variety of approaches and perspectives, classical views and contemporary research, embracing contradictions and similarities alike in order to reflect a notion that is inherent to the phenomenon of migration diversity.
