- Abstract
- Solvency II is a new prudential regime for the European insurance industry that introduces new risk management practices, aimed at harmonising reporting, rules, and procedures across Europe. Strict regulations are imperative to ensure the stability of insurance companies. Moreover, such regulations ensure that insurance companies avoid insolvency. The Solvency II directive has been delayed multiple times, but is finally set to be implemented on 1 January, 2016. To limit the scope of research, the Norwegian non-life insurance industry was selected in this study. Furthermore, there are specific issues related to the implementation of Solvency II that need to be treated by Norwegian regulatory institutions. The purpose of this study is therefore to examine the potential implications of Solvency II for Norwegian non-life insurers. In order to produce a thorough study, four highly experienced professionals from the Norwegian insurance industry were interviewed and offered valuable insights into current Solvency II developments. The findings suggest there is still considerable uncertainty linked to the practical implications of Solvency II, but overall Norwegian non-life insurers seem to be on track. Finally, the findings identify what measures that have been taken in Norway to ensure a smooth transition to Solvency II.
