- Psychotherapy for people with dementia is a burgeoning field and very little research into psychotherapists experience of working with clients with dementia exists. This qualitative research explores the experiences of four psychotherapists, two men and two women, who use different therapeutic approaches and have varying degrees of experience in working with clients with dementia. Brief background information on dementia and psychotherapy is included to provide context. The links between psychotherapy and dementia are explored via the perspectives of psychodynamic, existential and humanistic approaches. Pertinent psychotherapeutic interventions are considered. The debate on the efficacy of psychotherapy with people with dementia is acknowledged. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), based on Smith et al.s (2009) methodology, is used to analyse the data, which is placed in overarching themes. An integrative psychotherapeutic approach using psychodynamic, humanistic and existential ideas and concepts is employed to make sense of the findings. The findings indicate that therapists need to adopt flexibility in therapeutic approach, frame and boundaries. The therapeutic relationship is explored. The existence of the emotional world of clients with dementia is identified and the deep impact of this work on the participants is recognised, which signifies the importance of self-care. This study seeks to provide insight and understanding into psychotherapists experience of working with clients with dementia. It is relevant to organisations and practitioners offering, or considering offering, psychotherapeutic work with this client group. It highlights the value of psychotherapy with people with dementia and emphasises the need for future research and development in this area.
