Desa is Professor of Systemic Psychotherapy and a UKCP-registered systemic psychotherapist and supervisor, as well as a COSRT-accredited psychosexual and relationship therapist and supervisor. She has extensive clinical experience across a range of mental health settings and has taught postgraduate psychotherapy programmes since 1991.

She has held senior academic and leadership positions at training institutions, including the Institute of Family Therapy London, Relate, and the Porterbrook Clinic in Sheffield. In 2014, she was awarded a Fellowship of the Sheffield Society for the Study of Sexuality and Relationships in recognition of her contribution to sexology.

She was Programme Director for Psychotherapy at Regent's University London (2009–2016) and Head of Psychotherapy Programmes (2016–2020).
